Class Expectations and Grading Procedures
ALL Physics - Regular - IB & AP Physics
Please guide your classroom demeanor to meet the following expectations; in this way, everyone will receive the greatest possible benefit from our time together.
Class Expectations:
1. Please show the utmost respect to your peers inside and outside of this class!
2. When one person is talking, you should not be! Good listening is invaluable!
3. Arrive to class on time every day.
4. Do not use inappropriate language in class!
5. When homework is assigned, it must be done! Your failure to do so will result
in loss of points, approximately 1% per assignment. Also, remember you are
only short-changing yourself!
6. Any HORSE-PLAY at all during activities or labs will result in the removal
from the lab area and loss of that complete lab grade.
7. Bring your required materials (listed below) to class every day.
8. Note: AP classes only ; Due to AP standards for exams, you will not be allowed to
use graphing calculators on quizzes or examinations, but you will be able to use
those 4 or 8 function calculators, so those should accompany you to class every
day.
Required Materials: Textbook, (1-2) Quadrule / Composition notebooks to be your lab bound log and journal, (2) 3-Ring binders, one for loose-leaf for class notes and one empty that your labs will go into upon completion, grading and return, (1) trig calculator, paper, pens, pencils
Grading Procedures:
Class Participation: 10% per Quarter
1. To earn 100% for this part, you must be prepared for class each day and show
up each period of class on time. If you are absent, the number of days you are
absent = the number of days allowed to make up missed work. Of course this
depends on the fact that the absence is excused or unexcused.
2. You must complete all homework assignments on time; not necessarily 100%
correct, just all problems must be earnestly attempted and demonstrated as
such in writing on your paper.
Lab Requirements: 20-30 % per Quarter ~depends on the number of reports~
1. In order to earn full credit, every formal lab write-up and lab activity must be completed and turned in on time, late labs will lose 5 % of the lab grade per day late the lab is turned in, weekends count as do week days! Labs will be considered late if they are not turned in before class begins on the due date for that particular lab. Write-up guidelines will follow on a separate sheet.
2. In the event of your absence, you will have 2 days per lab missed to make an effort to make-up the experiment or activity. A lack of effort on your part within this time will result in the loss of the credit for that lab in question. If effort is made, within this time frame, but due to other circumstances, the above loss of 5% per extra day applies to the overall grade for your lab.
3. 15-25% of your Lab grade will come from the actual laboratory reports, formal and informal, the rest will come from your log or journal.
Projects and /or Quizzes: 15-25% per Quarter
1. There will be quizzes periodically to check on learning. Often they will only be a single problem and have an expected completion time of 10 minutes or less.
2. Quizzes are usually unannounced. They are also usually similar to homework problems.
3. There may be individual projects, as well as group projects that require some out of class time. The depth of the project will determine the percent value and may often be accomplished during a Monday or Tuesday session. For example, this could include the building of a demonstration apparatus to make a presentation in class on a specific Physics concept.
Examinations: 45-50% per Quarter
1. There will be a minimum of 2-4 exams per quarter. As you can see, each exam has the potential to contribute substantially towards your quarter grade.
2. Exams are made-up within 2 days of your return to school if an unexcused absence, this is per day missed. If you are absent for a longer period of time, the previous stated absence policy for make-up work will be imposed. The failure to meet the make-up arrangements within the allowed number of days, which is dependent on the number of days you are out of school will result in substantial credit loss for your examination grade.
3. Reviewing of examinations for Physics will under most circumstances be done during class time. Unfortunately, reviewing of examinations for Physics IB/AP will not be done during class time, the IB/AP demands do not allow for this freedom of time.
I have read and understand your expectations and will follow them to the best of my ability as is indicated by my signature.
