Scientist Scrapbook

Objectives:

• to learn of the successes and failures of one person significant in the development of science
• to collect specific information necessary to a biographical understanding of your scientist
• to recognize and summarize that person's contributions to science and to history
• to convey information through various methods within a scrapbook
• to write both creative and expository articles
• to compile a bibliography incorporating several electronically accessed resources

Procedure:

1. Select a person from the list. If there is a person whom you would like to research who is not on the list, check with your teacher.

2. Find resources from the library, other libraries, Internet, etc..

3. Take notes as you read, being sure to identify the information source on your notes.

4. Use biographies, encyclopedia articles, electronic tools such as ERIC, and the online magazine and/or newspaper index and the Internet.

5. Keep a bibliographical list as you read, include the page numbers!

6. Transform your notes into a variety of scrapbook entries

Points Possible Items your scrapbook must contain

(you must create original items)

• (1pt) title page
• (1pt) introductory sheet
• (2pt) a birth certificate
• (3pt) three, half-page diary entries revealing information about your scientist's youth
• (3pt) a letter, 1 page minimum, giving advice on how to succeed in high school chemistry
• (3pt) time line. A chronological depitction of important events in the person's life.
• (5pt) a one-page (minimum) dialog between a reporter for PeopleI magazine (you) and your scientist describing your scientist's research
• (3pt) a book cover for a biography about your subject
• (3pt) If your subject is living, a copy of a letter which you have mailed to our president asking for funds to support your scientist's research. Explain the importance of the research....
• or, if your scientist is deceased,
• both an obituary (a short published notice concerning a person's death) and an epitaph (a saying or verse that the person would like to have on his/her tombstone.)
• (3pt) a bibliography of at least three sources
• (2pt) notes and bibliographic info check up
