Journey Through the

Human Body Systems

a WebQuest for (Biology/Human Anatomy and Physiology)

Introduction

The "real" Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was found frozen in a cryogenic state at a remote location in the arctic circle. Your team at the National Institute of cryogenics has been assigned the task of surveying the body for possible diseases he may have had, or damage that may have occurred due to the crystals which formed during the freezing process. You will be injected, using a new reducing technique, into various systems to evaluate the structures and functions of each area. Your task is to prepare for your journey by researching the functions of the systems, noting diseases of the time, possible hazards you might encounter in visiting these systems, and creating a map for this journey. Upon completion of this journey, you will submit your findings to a committee (the class) to determine necessary repairs needed upon thawing.

The Task

The goal of this project is to give an overall sense of the organization and function of each of the eight human body systems. You will submit a written report describing your research and a copy of the map through the system. Your group will also orally present its findings to the class (committee) complete with a visual aid which may include drawings, computer graphics, photographs of actual organs, pictures from magazines, journals, or books, a video, or a multimedia presentation. Be creative!

The Process

To accomplish this task, each team will be assigned a body system. The team will then be expected to complete the following:

  1. Compile a written research paper which must include topics and vocabulary found at each site.
  2. Create a map of the pathway through the system. (Be Creative).
  3. Describe at least one disease, disorder or damage you found from this time period (late 1400-late 1500s), while on your journey through the system. You will present this, along with suggestions for necessary repairs, to the class (committee) in the form of an oral report accompanied by a visual aid. (Remember the damage could have occurred during the freezing process or it could be a preexisting condition.)
  4. Create a 20 point quiz for your classmates to include the following components:
    - 3-5 vocabulary terms
    - A short answer question, addressing how your topic relates to what we know about a "system".
    - 10 multiple choice questions (these multiple choice questions must have 4 answer options and the options may only be listed twice on the quiz). Turn your typed quiz in to Ms. Edward to have copies made before your presentation.

Evaluation

A rubric will be used to evaluate your project. Click here to view the rubric.

Conclusion

This WebQuest will give you an overall sense of the organization and function of each of the eight systems of the human body. Upon completion, keep in mind that the systems are also interrelated. For further investigation into the interrelationships among the systems and to check your understanding, go to Body Quest.
