Pre-IB Biology

General Description

The Pre-IB Biology course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory college biology course usually taken by biology majors during their first year. After showing themselves to be qualified, somed students may choose to move on the next sequence of courses, which will allow some students, to take upper level physics, chemistry, and biology courses or to register for courses for which biology is a prerequisite. Other students may have fulfilled a basic requirement for a laboratory science course and will be able to undertake other courses to pursue their majors.

Pre-IB Biology should include those topics that are regularly covered in college prep biology courses for majors or in the syllabus from a high quality college prep programs in introductory biology. The college prep course in biology differs significantly from the usual first high school biology course with respect to the type of textbook used, the range and depth of topics covered, the kind of laboratory work done by students, and the time and effort required by students. The textbooks required for Pre-IB Biology are also those used by college biology courses. The kind of labs done must be the

equivalent of those done by college students.

The Pre-IB Biology course is designed to be taken by students after the successful completion of a first course in higher level middle school biology   and one in higher level middle school chemistry as well. It aims to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and the analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of biology.
